Computing

Intent

All pupils at Collierley have the right to have rich, deep learning experiences that balance all the aspects of computing. At Collierley Primary school, we believe that ‘Computational Thinking’ plays an important role when helping children solve problems, design systems and participate effectively and safely in a digital world. Computers will be used to meet the needs of the computing curriculum and the knowledge associated with computer science, as well as enhancing the rest of the curriculum to assist learning in other areas.  Our pupils can think computationally to conceptualise, understand and used technology preparing them for today’s world and future.

At Collierley Primary School, we value the contribution that computing can make for the benefit of all pupils, staff, parents, governors and the wider community.

Our aim is:

  • To provide a rich environment which allows pupils to gain the confidence and ability to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world.

  • To provide opportunities to develop a wide range of fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding that will actually equip them for the rest of their life.

  • To provide a wealth of practical learning opportunities and transferable skills explicitly within the computing lesson and across other curriculum subjects.

Implementation

At Collierley Primary School we:

  • Teach online safety and digital literacy is constantly reinforced in regular intervals in each year group every term.

  • Use computing as an additional tool within our lessons to help children become creative thinkers.

  • Use appropriately planned lessons to encourage our children to use a variety of digital devices which are used to promote learning when appropriate.

  • Use a range of programs and technology to allow our children to build a bank of resources to support them in developing their learning and expressing their creativity.

  • Have adapted the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme to support the needs of our children to ensure their learning is challenging and practical.

  • Provide suitable and challenging learning opportunities for all children to match their ability and experience.

To provide a challenging computing curriculum, at Collierley we:

  • Set open-ended tasks so the children can take it to their own learning level.

  • Have a range of different challenges with increasing difficulty (shows which children are achieving at a higher level).

  • Have mixed ability groups so the children can share their experiences.

  • Provide different resources of different complexity (e.g. BeeBots to ev3 robots).

  • Use TAs to support children with SEN.

Children in KS1 and KS2 are given opportunities to:

  • Build upon learning year by year to ensure that skills are embedded. All children will have access to a range of technology including Beebots, EV3 robots, cameras, iPads, computers and micro:bits.

  • Become ‘Computational Thinkers’ as they develop their skills when programming, debugging and writing simple and advanced technology discretely.

  • Understand computer networks, including the internet, and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration.

  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

  • Independently use technology by being as active and practical as possible.

  • Use hardware and software in our discrete computing lessons however we build on our digital literacy skills across the curriculum.

Children in Early Years provision will be:

  • Exposed to the understanding of internet safety as they explore the world around them and how technology is an everyday part of their learning and understanding of the world.

  • Following the ‘Understanding the World’ milestones to allow our children to access technological devices in a real-life situation.
