Art and Design

Intent

Art and design at Collierley Primary will give children the chance to use their creativity and imagination to make works of art.  They will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design.  They will know about a range of different artists.  This will help them to forge links across the curriculum through the understanding of historical and cultural developments. Through challenges and enquiry, they will apply the skills, techniques and knowledge they have learnt.

Here, at Collierley Primary School, we value and are dedicated to the teaching of art. We see this as a fundamental part of school life. We are committed to providing an ‘Arts Rich Curriculum’ for our children. We believe that by developing this, we can contribute to the quality of our children’s lives, both within and beyond school. Our children come to school with different life experiences; exposure to high quality art and technology will increase the children’s aspirations and understanding of the world beyond their local area.  We see art and design as a means to support learning in a range of ways. The skills that are developed in these subjects can be transferred across the curriculum and thus aid learning.

Implementation

As a school and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

  • Become proficient in drawing painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Class teachers are responsible for teaching art, although there will be times when professional artists/helpers will be involved in the teaching of the topic. We will take every opportunity to develop links with outside agencies and experts, including visits to art galleries and industries.  The subjects will be taught each week in unit blocks, alternating to fit in with other class topics

Impact

Our children enjoy the self-expression that they experience in Art.

They are always keen to learn new skills and work hard to perfect those shown to them. The children’s art is cross-curricular, and helps them to express feelings and emotions in art, as well as show their knowledge and understanding in history, geography and science.  The subjects will enable all children to access the curriculum and enjoy success.

Our Art Curriculum

Every year children will study the work of a contemporary artist, a historical artist and an illustrator. They will develop skills in drawing, painting, collage, 3D art and printing. They will have the opportunity to explore a range of media and materials, including paint, clay, Modroc, pastels, pencils and pens. There will be time for each child to develop their own creativity as well as learning new art techniques.
